“A curious coffin indeed!” the vicar said, and his wife silently nodded agreement. He examined the long, iron box with his eyes, not daring to touch it. If the nineteenth century was going to be full of such contraptions, he would rather have remained in the eighteenth. “It is impregnable as a fortress. Did he mean it to last until Judgment Day?” “Ga kuriose tabut!” vikar shwo, e luy molya silensem niki pa konsenta. Lu examini longe, fer-ney boxa bay okos, bu osi-yen tachi it. Si shi-nin-ney sekla sal bi fule de tal shma-aparat, lu wud preferi resti in shi-ot-ney-la. “It es zinpruf kom fortesa. Ob lu intenti ke it duri til Judadey?”

A flash of lightning and clap of thunder seemed to underscore his quip, and he immediately regretted it. Worse yet, he started and hit some kind of metal tank, creating a booming noise that echoed the thunder. The horses protested nervously from their stalls near the cart, and even the lantern’s flame seemed shaken by the din. Bliza-flasha e guruha-klapa sembli emfasi luy joka-ki, e lu tuy afsosi it. Pyu bade, lu ek-tremi e imbati kontra koy-sorta-ney metal tanka, generati-yen guding kel ehovati guruha. Kavales shakwi nokalmem in ley plasa bli gari, e iven fanus-ney flama sembli disturbi-ney bay ek-shum.
Mrs. Long—now the widow Long—actually smiled for a moment. “David once said that thunder was the voice of God, even though a man called it forth. That was only a few months ago, when I scolded him for breaking our windows with one of his experiments. If only I had known! I should never have been cross with him!” Ewalaa madam Long—nau widuwa Long—smaili duran momenta. “David unves shwo-te ke guruha es Vos de Boh, iven si jen generati it. Se eventi yus shao mes bak, wen me reproshi lu bikos lu rasrupti nuy windas bay un fon luy experimenta. Magari me jan-te! Me gai-te neva iri om lu!”
She turned away, gazing out through a slight gap between the barn doors. The vicar glanced at his wife: they were well aware what she was thinking and where she was looking, but whether it was better said or not, neither knew. Ela turni e auskan tra gap-ki inter kavaldom-ney dwares. Vikar ek-kan swa-ney molya: li fulem jan kwo ela dumi e wo ela kan, bat ob li treba mensioni se, bu jan.
Finally she glanced back, perhaps thinking that their silence meant that she had offended them. “There are only a few lights burning at Doctor Proud’s house across the way. No doubt he is preparing for bed—preparing to dream up some new mischief. Why aren’t the wicked judged, Vicar?” Pa fin ela ek-kan bak, mogbi suposi-yen ke li silensi bikos ela he ofensi li. “Sol shao fanus brili she doktor Praud tra dao. Sin duba lu tayari swa fo kama — tayari swa fo koy nove dushtitaa. Way dushte jenta bu gei judi, vikar?”
The vicar knew better than to reply. Sometimes silence was the best answer. Vikar bin tro saje fo jawabi. Koytaim silensa godi zuy hao.
“He hounded and harried poor David to death,” she continued. “On the Judgment Day you mentioned, he shall have much to answer for. Why, I remember when David believed in people—when he had such hopes. He had so much to give the world—his inventions to help the miners and the farmers. Yet the last few weeks, all he could think about was how to take his secrets with him. That is no coffin, Vicar: it is a strongbox. He meant it to keep out prying eyes and hands. And his instructions! I should never have agreed to them, but he looked so tired, so desperate. I could not refuse.” “Lu he persekwi e disturbi povre David til morta,” ela shwo for. Ah, me remembi taim wen David fidi a jen — wen lu hev tal nadas. Lu mog-te dai tanto mucho a munda — swa-ney inventas fo helpi kwanshiloker e fermer. Bat duran laste shao wik, lu mog dumi sol om dao fo porti wek swa-ney sekretes kun swa. To es nul tabut, Vikar: it es panza-boxa. Lu intenti ke it preservi li fon jigyas-ney okos e handas. E luy instruktas! Me bu gai-te konsenti om li, bat lu aspekti-te tanto fatigi-ney, tanto sinnada-ney. Me bu mog-te refusi.”
She looked away from the coffin and toward the barn doors—and the doctor’s house beyond. Suddenly her tone changed. “I shall keep my word, of course. I suppose it is the only way to protect him and his secrets from Proud. Everything the doctor coveted all these years shall soon be out of his reach forever. Yes, there’s some triumph in that. Do you know, Proud actually offered to tear up our debts if I turned David’s body over to him? He hoped to dissect him, to discover the secret of David’s genius in his skull or brain! What manner of creature would do such things?” Ela turni kansa wek fon tabut, versu kavaldom dwares — e doktor-ney dom ausen. Abruptem suy ton shanji. “Me ve kipi may wada, sertem. Me suposi ke es sole dao fo protekti lu e suy sekretes fon Praud. Olo ke doktor gro-yao duran oli sey yar sun es buatenibil fo lu fo sempre. Ya, ye kelke triumfa in to. Ob yu jan ke Praud verem wadi rastori nuy debas si me dai David-ney lash a lu? Lu nadi disekti lu dabe deskovri sekret de David-ney genia in luy kapal oda brein! Kwel-sorta-ney jivika wud zwo lo tal?”
“Mrs. Long,” the vicar began carefully, “it is late, and we shall not be burying him tonight. In fact, this storm shall likely keep the villagers from repairing the bridge for a few days. There is no point in standing vigil; you need to rest.” “Madam Long,” vikar shwo chaukem, “es tarde, e nu bu ve dafni lu sey aksham. Faktem, sey storma probablem preventi ke vilajajenta repari ponta fo kelke dey. Reson fo jagi-wahti yok; yu nidi reposi.”
“I should call Alec and have the coffin moved into the parlor,” she said. “Poor David is not safe out here.” “Me treba voki Alek e mah lu pon tabut inu salon,” ela shwo-te. “Povre David bu es anchun hir ausen.”
“It would be nearly impossible for Alec to move that…”—the vicar managed to stop himself before he said “monstrosity”—“…that coffin all the way over to your house—at least not alone, and I am in no condition to assist him. Tomorrow some of the villagers may be able to help. For the time being, it is safe enough here. The Devil himself will not be abroad on such a night!” “Wud bi hampi buposible fo Alek tu muvi toy...” — vikar pai stopi swa e bu shwo “fuyka”— “...toy tabut ol dao a yur dom — amini bu bay swa, e me bu es kapable fo helpi lu. Manya kelke vilajajen mogbi helpi. Fo nau, it es basta anchun hir.
“I suppose that you are right,” the widow admitted. “At least about the moving. I really should stay here….” “Me suposi ke yu es prave,” widuwa ustupi-shwo. “Amini om muving. Me verem gai resti hir...”
The vicar’s wife took her arm gently but firmly. “It is too cold and wet out here for that. David would not want you sick.” Vikar-ney molya graspi suy bracha mulem bat resolutem. “Es tro lenge e mokre hir ausen fo to. David bu wud yao ke yu morbi.”
“It was not supposed to work out this way,” the widow said. “He wanted to be taken out to the moors the same day and… Oh, why did it have to rain? Why did the bridge have to collapse? And all just when we were ready to hitch up the horses and leave! If only the buildings were not so close together, or if there were no animals to worry about, I would…” Her voice trailed off helplessly. “Nu bu suposi-te ke dela resulti tak,” widuwa shwo. “Lu voli-te gei transporti a sumpa-felda pa same dey e... Ah, way mus pluvi? Way ponta mus krushi? E olo yus wen nu bin tayar fo joti kavales e chu! Si bilduras bu wud bi tanto blise, oda si bu wud ye animales sirkum, dan me wud…” Suy vos fadi sinmahta-nem.
As they listened to her, the vicar and his wife exchanged worried glances. Mrs. Long was clearly becoming incoherent, and the vicar’s wife patted her arm comfortingly. “God sends the rain as well as the thunder. He has some plan. Just trust Him and get some rest.” Al audi ela, vikar e suy molya kan-ki mutu nokalmem. Madam Long evidentem pagalifi-ki, e vikar-ney molya karesi suy bracha luli-shem. “Boh sendi pluva sam kam guruha. Lu hev koy plan. Simplem fidi a lu e reposi-ki ba.”
Mrs. Long could only nod exhaustedly, tearfully, and let herself be led back to her home. Madam Long mog sol niki fatigi-nem, plaki-shem, e lasi swa gei dukti bak a dom.

Outside the barn, figures stirred. “I thought she’d never leave!” said one. Another grunted agreement. A tall man emerged from the shadows and stole inside the barn. “Come now, a little rain should not dampen our spirits. It seems that our friend Alec has given us more of a prize than we could have imagined!” Ausen kavaldom, figuras ek-muvi. “Me dumi-te ke ela neva ve chu!” wan shwo. Otre grumbli al konsenti. Un gao man emerji aus shadas e ahfi-go inu kavaldom. Sembli ke nuy amiga Alek dai-te a nu pyu valorful premia kem nu mog he imajini!”
“I’m not your friend, Proud,” a stocky young man corrected. “I’m the Longs’ friend. I helped them every way I could. You just remember your side of the deal—you tear up their bills and pack up your ghouls and get yourself back to London.” “Me bu es yur amiga, Praud,” masbute yungo korekti. “Me es Longes-ney amiga. Me helpi-te li pa kada dao ke me mog. Yus remembi yur wada — rastori ba ley biles e paki yur gules e porti swa bak a Landan.”
“Of course! First, however, you must help my men switch these coffins. I must say, it was considerate of the dear boy to expire before he could add any of that fancy scrollwork he so loved; it would have been the devil to duplicate that! But a plain, iron box was not the least bit difficult—especially since you gave me a drawing of that peculiar latch.” “Sertem! Un-nem, yedoh, yu mus helpi may yuanes intershanji sey tabutes. Me mus shwo, se bin karim fon taraf de kare amiga, tu expiri bifoo ke lu mog adi eni komplike ornika ke lu tanto lubi; tu kopi to wud bi bes-ney mushkila! Bat fer-ney boxa sin dekora bin bu tanikem mushkile — osobem bikos yu dai-te a me rasma de toy ajibe fixika.”
He examined the coffin briefly. “Amazing! He really did die sooner than he thought. He clearly did not quite finish the lock on the latch—the lid is sealed, but if he had survived even another day or two he would have made the latch self-sealing as well. As it is, it affords me a fairly simple point of entry. And poor Mrs. Long thinks that it is complete—an impenetrable fortress for her late, lamented husband. Of course, if she had dumped it out in the bog as he no doubt intended, I suppose that it would have served well enough.” Lu examini tabut kway. “Astonival! Lu verem morti-te pyu sun kem lu expekti. Lu klarem bu fulem finzwo kufla on fixika — kapak es hermete, bat si lu wud jivi iven un ge adike dey oda dwa lu wud mah fixika selfa-hermete toshi. Tal kom es, it dai a me ga fasile zindao. E povre madam Long suposi ke it es komplete — zinpruf fortesa fo suy bu pyu jive, begrivi-ney mursha. Naturalem, si ela wud he mah-lwo it ausen inu sumpa kom lu sin duba intenti-te, me suposi ke it wud he servi basta hao.”
Proud’s men took only a few moments to unload the fake coffin from one cart and weights from another. “I wish that I had foreseen the added weight of his little secrets,” Proud said. “I only allowed for Mr. Long’s body, and the real coffin is slightly heavier. Still, I doubt that anyone will notice.” Yedoh me dubi ke eniwan merki.”
Loading the real coffin with its cargo took longer, and the trak back to the doctor’s house, though short in distance, stretched out in time. The rain that hid them also slowed them. Tu lodi vere tabut kun suy karga pren pyu taim, e safara bak a doktor-ney dom, obwol kurte pa dalitaa, fa-longe pa taim. Pluva ke ahfi li toshi deri li.
“Put your backs into it!” Proud hissed as loudly as he dared. He was answered by distant thunder. “Listen, Alec! Your God must have a lot to say tonight!” “Fai ba vigor!” Praud hisi tanto lautem kom lu osi. Lu pai jawaba to dale guruha. “Audi ba, Alek! Yur Boh mus hev mucho fo shwo sey aksham!”
“Maybe you should listen, then,” Alec answered. “Or maybe I should.” “Mogbi yu gai audi, dan,” Alek jawabi. “Oda mogbi me ya gai.”
The cart lurched to a stop just then in front of the workshop entrance. “No time for second thoughts now, Alec. Come on, lads, let’s get it inside.” “Taim yok fo dwa-ney duma nau, Alek. Kamon, jenta, nu pon ba it inu.”
After much puffing and straining, they finally laid the coffin just within the huge doors of his laboratory. Proud walked around it once, checking it from every angle to make sure that it was really there. “Care to watch the opening? When I think of what it contains—formulae, diagrams—King Solomon’s Mines would run a distant second!” Afte mucho gro-fuka e eforta, li pa fin pon tabut yus pas gro-dwares de luy laboratoria. Praud go sirkum it unves, examini-yen it fon kada angula fo mah swa serte ke it verem ye. “Ob yu yao kan ofning? Wen me dumi om kwo it konteni — formulas, diagramas — rego Shlomo-ney Kwanshilok wud apena gwin dwa-ney pris!”
Alec scowled. “It was bad enough when you just wanted to look at his body. If you think you can find his genius by tracing the bumps on his skull or the shape of his brain, well, you’re just foolish, no matter how many degrees you have. But to rob his actual plans and work—that’s something else again! His genius is with God, well out of your reach, and that’s where his ideas should be, too.” Alek iri-fruni. “Bin basta bade wen yu sol yao examini lash. Si yu kredi ke yu mog findi luy genia al fai mapa de baljas on luy kapal oda de luy brein-forma, wel, yu es rek stupide, bu muhimi kwanto diploma yu hev. Bat tu raubi luy fakta-ney planes e gunturas — to es koysa ga farke! Luy genia es she Boh, ausen yur ateni-mogsa, e luy ideas toshi gai bi dar hi.”
“His genius may be with God, but his ideas are quite within my reach—and so are you. If you don’t want the notes you worked for, fine; but remember, I can tell your friend Mrs. Long who helped me get her husband’s body. She’s been like a mother to you for all these years. If she only knew…” “Luy genia mogbi es she Boh, bat luy ideas es inen may ateni-mogsa — e yu toshi. Si yu bu yao biles ke yu gwin, hao; bat remembi, me mog shwo a yur amiga madam Long hu hi helpi-te me pai suy mursha-ney lash. Ela bin kom mata a yu duran oli sey yar. Si ela wud jan...”
With a cry of fury, Alec spun around and ran out into the storm. It was impossible to fight all of Proud’s men, but if he could get away, get a horse, and tell the village, they would cheerfully lynch the creature. They had wavered before, hating the doctor yet loving his money, but this would bring them to their senses—as it had Alec himself. If only he could ford the river! Al furia-nem krai, Alek ek-turni swa e lopi aus, inu storma. Es buposible tu batali oli Praud-ney yuan, bat si lu'd mog eskapi, pai kaval, e rakonti a vilaja, li wud joi al pendi-kili fuy-wan. Li hesiti-te bifooen, heni-yen doktor bat lubi-yen luy mani, bat se ve restori ley rasum — kom in Alek selfa. Magari lu mog go tra riva!
As he ran, he glanced back. He could just make out one of Proud’s men in the doorway, readying a knife. Alec turned and ducked down as he ran, but nothing happened. Another look showed the man pulling another knife—the first must have missed because of the wind or the darkness. Someone inside reached out and grabbed the man’s hand roughly, and he slipped through the doorway and out of sight. Alec scrabbled his way toward the house, often on all fours, as quickly as he could. His plan had changed: Proud and his men clearly meant to keep their secret at any cost, and the people in the house must be warned. Yet Proud was evidently willing to bide his time. They were all cut off from the village by the river, and he would take a few moments to survey his prize before bothering with them. Al lopi, lu ek-kan bak. Lu mog apena vidi un fon Praud-ney yuan in dwarlok, al tayari kinjal. Alek turni e flexi avan al lopi, bat nixa eventi. Otre kansa reveli yuan al extrakti otre kinjal — un-ney mus he mistrefi por feng oda tumitaa. Koywan inen extendi-yen graspi yuan-ney handa nomulem, e lu fliti tra dwarlok e fa-wek. Alek hasti-muvi versu dom, oftem pa char pata, sam kway kom mog. Suy plan he shanji: Praud e suy yuan evidentem intenti kipi swa-ney sekret pa eni dao, e jen in dom mus gei warni. Obwol Praud klarem yao weiti-ki. Li oli bin separi-ney fon vilaja bay riva, e lu sal pasi kelke momenta al cheki swa-ney premia bifoo ke peni om li.
A light in the parlor window told him what he needed to know. As he entered the house, from long habit he paused briefly to knock a little of the mud off his shoes. Mrs. Long always hated mud in the house, and there was probably no immediate danger. The action also helped calm him, and he began trying to think of a plan as he approached the parlor. He stopped guiltily when he heard Mrs. Long talking. Luma in salon-ney winda diki a lu kwo lu nidi jan. Al zin dom, por longe abyas lu pausi-ki fo udali shao kicha fon shu. Madam Long sempre heni kicha in dom, e probablem tuy-ney danja yok. Sey akta yoshi helpi kalmi lu, e lu en-trai inventi plan al blisifi a salon. Lu stopi kulpem wen lu audi madam Long shwo-she.
“…And that is when he told me that he wanted to be taken up like Elijah: to rise in a whirlwind, escorted by chariots of fire, to a place where Proud could not touch him.” “...E dan lu shwo a me ke lu yao gei asendisi kom Eliya: go uupar in virtifeng, eskorti-ney bay agni-ney gari, a loko wo Praud bu mog tachi lu.” - ...
“An understandable wish,” the vicar replied. “But not even his genius could command such a miracle.” “Samajibile yaosa,” vikar jawabi. “Bat iven luy genia bu mog komandi tal mirakla.”
“But it could! It shall! That is why he told me to place the coffin on the Pavement—the flat, stony stretch just before the bogs. I shall merely lift up on the latch and walk quickly back to the cart. That is why David filled it with that terrible powder—the powder he devised back when he said that thunder is the…” “It mog hi! It ve hi! Por to hi lu instrukti ke me pon tabut on Pavimenta — plane, ston-ney loko yus bifoo sumpa. Me ve simplem turni fixika uupar e go kway bak a gari.
The blast and Alec entered the parlor at the same time, yet from different sides. He ran past Mrs. Long to the now-shattered window, to gaze out at the fire across the way. Explosa e Alek zin salon tuhun, bat fon kontra-ney taraf. Lu lopi pas madam Long a nau rasrupti-ney winda, dabe auskan agni tra dao.
Mrs. Long came up behind him and stopped short at the sight. “What happened?” Madam Long blisifi fon baken lu e ek-stopi al vidi. “Kwo eventi?”
Alec turned slowly from the window. “Proud finally heard the voice of God.” Alek turni lentem fon winda. “Praud pa fin audi Vos de Boh.”
